Power sockets and voltage in Canada

In Canada, the standard voltage and power socket type are the same as in the US and are:

  • Voltage: 120 volts AC
  • Frequency: 60 Hz
  • Power Socket Type: Type A and Type B. Type A has two flat parallel pins, and Type B is similar but with an additional round grounding pin.

You should always check the voltage on the back of your items. I brought from Canada to Germany an N64 and a friend warned me the voltage was different, I could’ve blown it. Usually, newer devices will work in both places, but you should check.

Are my devices compatible?

Most North American devices are compatible, but if you’re coming from Europe, Asia, or Australia, you may need a voltage converter or adapter.

Tips for Using Electronics in Canada

  • Check the voltage on your devices—most modern electronics (like laptops and phones) support 100-240V, meaning you only need a plug adapter.
  • High-power appliances (hair dryers, curling irons, and some kitchen devices) may not work unless they support 120V.
  • Travel adapters: If your device’s plug is different, a universal travel adapter will allow you to connect to Canadian sockets.
  • Power strips with universal sockets can help if you need to charge multiple devices from different regions.

Before plugging anything in, verify whether it supports 120V at 60Hz to avoid damaging your electronics.
